Google unveiled a significant update to its search algorithm on August 1, 2024, aimed at combating the spread of non-consensual explicit content, particularly artificial deep fakes.
The update introduces several key changes to Google’s search functionality and content removal processes:
1. Enhanced Content Removal Process Google has refined its system to remove non-consensual explicit deep fakes from search results. Upon approval of a removal request, the system will remove the flagged content and filter out similar explicit results in related searches involving the affected individual. Additionally, a new scanning mechanism is now in place to detect and eliminate duplicate images once the original has been removed.
2. Adjustments to the Ranking SystemThe search algorithm has been updated to decrease the visibility of explicit deep fake content in search results. For queries that involve explicit material, especially those including personal names, the system will now prioritize non-explicit content, such as news articles, to reduce exposure.
3. Site Ranking ChangesWebsites that have had numerous pages removed due to the presence of explicit deep fakes may experience changes in their overall search rankings. This adjustment aims to deter the proliferation of fake explicit content across websites.
4. According to Google, the new update has substantially decreased the visibility of explicit image results for targeted searches, with a reported reduction of over 70% for specific queries.
5. Industry Collaboration Recognizing that the issue of explicit fake content extends beyond search engines, Google plans to collaborate with industry partners and experts to tackle this challenge more comprehensively.
This update represents Google’s ongoing efforts to adapt its search functionality in response to the evolving challenges of digital content.
